JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the MA/NH Director of Public Policy, the Senior Manager of Public Policy leads the policy work and mission of the Alzheimer’s Association in New Hampshire by building and mobilizing grassroots advocacy, interacting with policy makers and coalitions, and communicating the Association’s issues and priorities as a public speaker and statewide expert to the media. This position will occasionally provide support to Massachusetts advocacy work and requires significant travel within the Chapter, and some travel within the U.S., as well as occasional availability during evenings and weekends.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee the development and execution of public policy priorities in NH in collaboration with the Director, other relevant chapter staff and the national public policy office.
  • Develop the strategy - and oversee all efforts and activities - to achieve the state-level public policy priorities, including working with the state legislature and state agencies such as the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Recruit, train, and facilitate efforts of volunteer advocates, including Alzheimer’s Association Ambassadors and their team members, to regularly communicate with New Hampshire members of Congress and key New Hampshire state legislators in support of nationwide federal policy priorities of the Alzheimer’s Association.
  • Work with public policy team to develop and cultivate professional relationships with key state agencies, elected officials, and public health organizations.
  • Lead chapter’s efforts to participate in NH policy task forces and coalitions. 
  • Plan, manage, coordinate and participate in legislative visits (district, state, and federal)
  • Work with relevant staff in drafting and editing bills. 
  • Lead the creation and research of our annual state policy priorities and platform in NH. 
  • Monitor NH regulatory issues and research and track policy issues and bills that come up during Session. 
  • Plan and implement all grassroots and grass tops advocacy activities focusing on federal, state, and local leaders.
  • Plan and implement Alzheimer’s Advocacy Day(s) at the state capitol, including recruiting advocates and coordinating their activities.
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteer advocates to attend the annual Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C. and to engage in pre- and post-Forum district office meetings.
  • As part of the MA/NH chapter, provide support to Massachusetts advocacy efforts and other Chapter and Regional efforts as needed.
  • Promote the Association’s state and federal policy priorities, including through press releases, letters to the editor, social media and other earned media events.
  • Manage advocacy database, ensuring volunteer advocates are reporting activities and contacts with federal and state officials.
  • Track and report activities to ensure compliance with federal and state lobbying law as well as tracking protocols developed by our Washington DC office.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree preferred. Relevant work experience will be considered.
  • Five years of experience in public policy/public affairs/community organizing activities, preferably with a nonprofit organization, including working with volunteers.
  • Experience working with the NH legislature and state executive branch preferred. 
  • Strong and extensive experience in volunteer management/community organizing and/or in the legislative, regulatory, and budget process.
  • Familiar with senior, aging, health and long-term care issues. An understanding of Alzheimer’s disease/dementia and basic understanding of public health, a plus.
  • Two to three years of experience with relevant presentation software and technologies, as well as with social media and internet tools.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. Ability to travel frequently by car and air across the state and country as necessary.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.

  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to plan, implement and assess a course of action and delivery of results
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, reflecting an understanding of the appropriate use of communication technologies based on audience
  • Appreciation of cultural and ethnic diversity, especially with respect to outreach to underserved communities. Demonstrated success working with diverse population.
  • Demonstrated success building strong partnerships and implementing innovative ideas to grow organization’s mission

This is a hybrid role with some opportunities to work remotely and some travel, office and community engagement work expected, as public health guidance allows.
