Senior Director, Congressional Affairs
Job Description
The Senior Director of Congressional Affairs is a key leadership role responsible for advancing all aspects of federal congressional relations. This position drives the strategic vision for the congressional affairs team, ensuring the successful execution of policy initiatives that advance the Alzheimer’s Association’s and AIM’s priorities. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Public Policy, the Senior Director serves as a primary liaison with congressional leadership and external stakeholders, while managing a broader scope of federal policy initiatives beyond legislative efforts on Capitol Hill.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Planning: Will work on short and long term strategic planning to ensure that the team’s legislative efforts successfully address the Association’s policy goals.
- Provide high-level analysis of federal policy developments and translate organizational policy goals into actionable advocacy strategies.
- Build and maintain high-level relationships with key members of Congress and coalition partners.
- Represent the organization at major policy conferences, panels, and think-tank events, serving as a spokesperson and policy expert.
- Lead efforts to increase visibility and influence in relevant federal policy coalitions and working groups.
- Lead relevant policy coalitions or working groups, representing the organization’s interests and shaping collective advocacy efforts.
- Act as a senior advisor to the SVP and executive leadership on key policy and political decisions.
- Cross-Departmental Coordination: Coordinate with state government affairs and advocacy teams to ensure a unified approach on issues that span different levels of government, avoiding siloed efforts.
- Interdepartmental Training: Educate and inform other departments (e.g. operations, product, legal) about federal policy changes and advocacy plans, ensuring company-wide awareness and alignment.
- Supervise and provide strategic direction to federal affairs staff.
- Stakeholder Communications: Oversee federal affairs contributions to newsletters, briefings, or other communications to keep key stakeholders (Association and AIM board members, partners, supporters) informed of federal affairs activities and successes.
- Drive external relations and coalition-building efforts, expanding the organization’s network and influence beyond Congress.
- In the capacity of Senior Director of the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM), this position bears responsibility for the following activities:
- Expanding AIM’s political engagement, including working with the AIM’s Executive Director in developing the strategic direction of AIM’s connected PAC, developing political strategies, and attending political events regularly.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required; MA or JD preferred
- 12-15 years of progressive leadership and Congressional experience and/or lobbying experience with a health care association.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive expertise in federal legislative affairs, with a strong understanding of both Congress and federal agencies.
- Proven ability to lead high-impact advocacy campaigns and develop strategic federal policy initiatives.
- Strong experience in political strategy, PAC management.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and influence executive leadership, board members, and external stakeholders.
- Experience managing budgets and overseeing multi-functional teams.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.

Position Grade & Compensation: Grade 413 The Alzheimer's Association’s good faith expectation for the salary range for this role is between $172,000 - $226,700
