POSITION SUMMARY
Provide management level leadership and implementation of marketing, communications, media relations, event sponsorship, brand management and audience development for the Alzheimer's Association Northern California and Northern Nevada. The Director of Communications will execute and monitor the Marketing Communication plan and maintain alignment with the Association’s strategic plan. This position also serves as the Marketing/Communications liaison for Region with the home office. S/He will lead a team of three other communications professionals and provide strategic counsel to the Chief Executive Officer regarding all elements of communication. This position is located in the San Jose office.

This is a full-time position, located in San Jose, California, and reports to the Executive Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as an integral part of both our Executive Leadership Team and Management Team.  
  •  
  • Oversee earned media strategies to effectively grow earned media, strengthen relationships with key media outlets and increase donated media opportunities. 
  •  
  • Oversee paid media strategies in support of strategic plan goals. 
  •  
  • Develop and curate timely, engaging content for the chapter’s digital communications (web site, social media, enews and blog) and bi-annual print newsletter.  
  •  
  • Work with staff and volunteers to establish strong relationships with key local media outlets and proactively secure earned media coverage.  
  •  
  • Quickly and effectively respond to inbound media inquiries. 
  •  
  • Create or revise materials (including pitches, releases, backgrounders, etc.) as needed to support media outreach. 
  •  
  • Provide direction to cost effective budgeting and resource allocation to meet the communication needs of the Chapter. 
  •  
  • Serve as a key resource and counsel to the Board of Directors regarding public awareness and brand identity. 
  •

Mimimum Requirements  

 
     
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing or a related field. 
  •  
  • 10 years of professional experience as part of a media relations in-house or agency marketing/communications team. 
  •  
  • Strong media relations background preferred. 
  •  
  • Proven portfolio and success in implementing marketing communications strategies and tactics, especially with limited budgets. 
  •  
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills. 
  •  
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment. 
  •  
  • Impeccable writing and editing skills. 
  •  
  • Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) writing style. 
  •  
  • Knowledge of and comfort navigating social media tools. 
  •  
  • Extremely organized. 
  •  
  • Excellent customer service skills when working with internal and external clients. 
  •  
  • Ability to travel 30% throughout the Northern California & Northern Nevada territory and to the national headquarters in Chicago. 
  •  
  • Ability to be available evenings, weekends and early mornings as media opportunities present themselves. 
  •  
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and demonstrate inclusion. 
  •  
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift and transport up to 25 lbs. of materials. 
  •  
  • Strong knowledge of Northern California / Northern Nevada media market. 
  •  
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations and/or managing volunteers. 
  •  
  • Experience managing a multi-function communications team. 
  •  
  • Experience working with field offices/remote locations. 
  •  
  • Facility for juggling a wide range of tasks and often complex issues. 
  •  
  • Self-starter, including the initiative to proactively identify and execute projects that will advance the mission.
