Director of Advocacy
Job Description
The Southern California Director of Advocacy serves as the principal staff for grassroots advocacy efforts in Southern California and is responsible for grassroots engagement and volunteer recruitment in support of the Association’s state and federal public policy priorities in the state. The Director of Advocacy reports to the Regional Vice President and represents the Alzheimer’s Association's Southern California chapters.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and implement all grassroots and grasstops advocacy activities focusing on federal, state, and local leaders.
- Recruit, train, and guide efforts of volunteer Alzheimer’s Ambassadors and Alzheimer’s Congressional Team members for year-round advocacy with their assigned member of Congress.
- In partnership with government affairs staff, manage year-round state policy grassroots advocacy activities, including office visits and correspondence and the volunteer Alzheimer’s State Champion program.
- Plan and implement Alzheimer’s Advocacy Day at the state capitol, in coordination with the California Public Policy team; recruit advocates to attend and coordinate their meetings and activities.
- Mobilize advocates on federal issues in coordination with the Association’s National Public Policy Office in Washington, D.C., including recruitment and participation in the annual Advocacy Forum in D.C. and pre- and post-Forum district office engagement.
- Work with advocates to promote the Association’s federal and state policy priorities in earned and social media, and collaborate with the Director of Communications to identify media outreach opportunities including letters to the editor and press releases.
- Plan and implement town halls/community events with members of the state’s congressional delegation.
- Collaborate with Association staff across the Southern California chapters regularly, including Communications, Programs, Health Systems, chapter executives, and Regional Vice President to advance mission priorities, presence in communities, and public policy goals.
- Manage advocacy database, including by ensuring advocates are reporting activities and contacts with federal and state officials. Report lobbying activity to ensure compliance with federal and state compliance laws.
- This position will supervise two Advocacy Managers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Political or issue advocacy campaign experience desired.
- Extensive experience in volunteer recruitment, volunteer management, and/or working with volunteers.
- Experienced in coalition building, and have an understanding and background in community organizing.
- Current contacts within the state government and the federal congressional delegation are a plus.
- Familiar with Medicaid, senior, aging, health, and long-term care issues.
- Demonstrates the ability to anticipate, identify, organize, and analyze public policy opportunities.
- Possess excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Detail-oriented, adaptable, organized and able to successfully manage multiple projects and tasks.
- Proven self-starter with excellent judgment and careful attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations with high integrity, diplomacy and initiative.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record, access to a reliable vehicle and proof of automobile insurance.
- Ability/willingness to travel across the state, including some evenings and weekends (up to 15%).
- Travel by car and occasionally by air is required.
- Attend the Association's annual Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent experience.
- At least 5 years experience working in grassroots advocacy, volunteer management, or community organizing, preferably with non-profit organizations.
