The Director of the Healthy Brain Initiative serves as the Principal Investigator for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Cooperative Agreement with the CDC on the Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI). S/he is responsible for implementing the initiatives carried out under the Cooperative Agreement, including overseeing efforts at implementing the action items of the Public Health Road Map; securing state use of the Cognitive and Caregiving Modules of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS); and developing and promoting a public health curriculum on Alzheimer’s.
Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serve as the Principal Investigator for the Cooperative Agreement with the CDC on the Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) and oversee both the programmatic and public policy efforts of the HBI, which shall include:
• Overseeing the efforts at implementing the action items of the Public Health Road Map (including, with respect to risk reduction, in conjunction with the Vice President of Health Policy and the Director of the Center of Excellence on Risk Reduction);
• In active and ongoing consultation with the State Affairs Department of the Public Policy Division (see below), disseminating, and building support for, the Road Map among state public health officials, state chronic disease directors, state policymakers, local public health agencies and officials, tribal entities, public health organizations, and others;
• Developing relationships with and building partnerships among non-governmental organizations involved in public health and related issues;
• Securing state use of the Cognitive Module and the Caregiving Module in the annual Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys;
• Assisting in the dissemination of the results on subjective cognitive decline and caregiving from the BRFSS surveys;
• Overseeing efforts related to the dementia and dementia-related objectives of Healthy People 2030;
• Working to develop, disseminate, and promote a public health curriculum on Alzheimer’s for public health schools, public health professional associations, and public health accreditation and certification entities;
• Building capacity among public health agencies to enhance their ability to undertake actions to address cognitive health and Alzheimer’s; and
• Managing vendors and consultants hired to assist in the projects of the HBI Cooperative Agreement.
- Serve as the main point of contact between the Alzheimer’s Association and the CDC regarding the HBI Cooperative Agreement, which shall include:
• Coordinating the Association’s work on the HBI Cooperative Agreement with that of the CDC to ensure appropriate collaboration and partnership between the Association and the CDC;
• Creating annual budget submissions to the CDC for the HBI Cooperative Agreement; and
• Preparing materials and writing reports for the CDC on the activities and expenditures of the Association under the HBI Cooperative Agreement.
- Ensure all HBI work is coordinated and aligned with:
• All other Association public health work, including the Public Health Center of Excellence on Risk Reduction; and
• All Association public policy work.
- In conjunction with the Director of the Center of Excellence on Risk Reduction, the Associate Director of Centers of Excellence, and other public health staff as determined by the Vice President of Health Policy, work with the State Affairs Department of the Public Policy Division to strategize, develop, and implement activities and tactics to increase public health agency action consistent with the Public Health Road Map.
- Bachelor's degree in Public Health or related field
- Minimum 5-10 years of public health policy
- Preferred Education: Masters degree in Public Health
- Preferred Years of Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years in government (state or federal), or in government affairs work at a voluntary health organization
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Deep understanding of public health as well as state governments
- Experience in the policy aspects of public health
- Experience in building relationships, partnerships, and coalitions on – and in building support for – governmental action on public health issues
- Ability to demonstrate the strategic thinking, judgment, and management skills necessary to direct a program
- Knowledge of public health practice a plus
- Ability to travel u to 10% (once it is safe to travel)
