Health services research examines how people get access to health care, how much care costs, and what happens to individuals because of this care. This field aims to better understand how individuals achieve their collective health goals. The main goals of health services research are to identify the most effective ways to organize, manage, finance, and deliver high quality care, and understand how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care, the quality and cost of health care, and ultimately our health and well-being. By nature, it is inter-disciplinary, blending understanding of research economics, public health, implementation and epidemiology, among other expertise, to build a comprehensive perspective of how health systems respond to and adapt to changing healthcare environments and the broader determinants of health.
Its research domains are individuals, families, organizations, institutions, communities, and populations. The role offers an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the scientific and medical community, payers and other health systems researchers and experts, to discuss the social determinants of health, health behavior, intervention methods, program planning and evaluation, health communication, and community-based participatory research. There is an opportunity at the Alzheimer’s Association for Implementation research as relevant to health services, focusing on the fulfillment of the US POINTER Study promise and the effectiveness of specific health interventions like those studied therein.
Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work with Chief Science Officer and Chief Program Officer to create strategy and direction on how the Association can promote and lead/conduct health systems research including access to health care, care costs, and what happens to individuals because of dementia care and future treatments.
- The role offers an opportunity to engage and convene in dialogue with the scientific and health system/provider community, payers and other health systems researchers and experts, to discuss the social determinants of health, health behavior, intervention methods, program planning and evaluation, health communication, and community-based participatory research.
- The health services research director will identify opportunities for the Association participate in and lead research in dementia high quality care, and how treatment, social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviors affect access to health care.
- Strategize with leadership to create opportunity for Implementation research as relevant to health services, focusing on the fulfillment of the US POINTER Study, future pharmacological treatments and the effectiveness of interventions.
- Familiarity with the healthcare delivery system and the roles of various stakeholders. Broad familiarity with – and interest in – diverse areas of health services and/or medical research. Knowledge of implementation of best practices literature and be able to incorporate relevant concepts into research initiatives and communications.
- Travel as needed to represent Alzheimer’s Association at external meetings and to stay abreast of new research and funding opportunities.
- MS or PhD required.
- 5 years of related experience required.
- PhD preferred.
- 10 years of related experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Very strong written skills; strong verbal communication and oral presentation skills
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Past publications on health systems/services related research
- Experience with obtaining funding from either government or private entities, to conduct health services research
- Experience maintaining investigator relationships within health systems or building networks of individuals to conduct multi-site research
- Experience in early detection research or application of research outcomes on early detection in health systems
- Experience building system protocols and measuring quality improvement initiatives
- Experience translating research into applied content for non-scientific audiences.
- Travel up to 50%
