Job Description

The Associate Director, Field and Congressional Affairs, is responsible for: (1) serving as the liaison with public policy field staff to ensure understanding of federal legislative priorities and federal affairs process; (2) assisting Field Operations and Advocacy teams in addressing questions related to federal activities(3) maintaining specific internal and external web pages to ensure information is up-to-date; (4) drafting written materials and correspondence to congressional staff and internal audiences on federal legislative and regulatory issues and priorities; and (5) working with bipartisan members of Congress on the Association's federal legislative priorities.

The successful candidate must be a strong team player and enjoy working in a collegial yet highly demanding and effective culture. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a team, exercise sound judgment, execute strategy, and operate with confidentiality will also be required, as are excellent communication (verbal and communication) and interpersonal skills. We seek an individual with an appreciation for the complexities of working within a large voluntary health organization. In addition, the preferred candidate will have a strong mission orientation and a passion for advocacy on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Association and the people it represents.

 

This position reports to the Director, Congressional Affairs and is based in Washington, DC or remote/home-based within the U.S., with occasional domestic travel up to 20%

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Engage with Public Policy Field Staff to ensure understanding and answer any questions on federal legislative priorities, and problem solve when field staff encounter challenges in member of Congress relationships
  2. Maintain relationships with Public Policy Field Staff through communication vehicles such as weekly office hours, monthly chapter public policy calls, and email.
  3. Execute federal policy priority campaigns and work with Public Policy Field Staff to carry out these strategies
  4. Assist Field Operations and Advocacy teams in addressing questions related to federal activities.
  5. Drafting written materials and correspondence to congressional staff and internal audiences on federal legislative and regulatory issues and priorities.
  6. Maintaining various records and reports including a database of congressional targets and contacts, and reports and background materials, as needed, on congressional targets.
  7. Engage in bipartisan lobbying and public policy activities.
  8. Work with bipartisan members of Congress, their staffs and Congressional committees on the Association's federal legislative priorities.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  •  Excellent oral communication skills including ability to communicate complex information in accessible way

  •  Demonstrated ability to anticipate, identify, organize, and analyze public policy opportunities
  •  Detail-oriented, adaptable, organized and able to successfully manage multiple projects and tasks
  •  Proven self-starter with excellent judgment and careful attention to detail
  •  Ability to work effectively with diverse populations with a high level of integrity, diplomacy and initiative.
  •  Understanding of Alzheimer’s, aging, health care, and long-term care issues is preferred.
  •  Basic understanding of federal legislative, regulatory, and budget processes.
  •  Fluency with MS Office suite of applications, including Powerpoint

REQUIRED  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  •  Bachelor's Degree
  •  6-8 years experience working on public policy, or other relevant experience, at the national level.
  •  Field experience preferred

Position Location: Washington DC (Hybrid) 

Full time based on 37.5 hours minimum per week

Position Grade: 409 (estimated salary range $98,000-$120,000)

Reports To: Director, Congressional Affairs
